Many people are unaware of the lasting effect of an evening’s alcohol consumption the morning after. Whilst there has been a decrease in numbers of people drink driving after an evening out, there have been increases in prosecution for drink driving offences between the hours of 6am and 8am in the morning – people who have had a few drink the evening before and not waited long enough for the alcohol to leave their system.
As stated by Bedford Borough Council, on average 255 people in the UK fail a breath test every day: http://www.bedford.gov.uk/transport_and_streets/road_safety/useful__information_and_advice/safe_driving/drink_driving.aspx . Police are cracking down on drink driving – especially over the Christmas period with breath tests being carried out on every driver involved in a collision – and so it is vital to be aware of the facts.
The legal limits for drink driving are 80 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood or 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. It is impossible to know how much an individual can drink without putting themselves over the limit – it depends on height, weight, metabolism, sex and the type of alcoholic drink being consumed. If a driver provides a reading over the limit, they will be breaking the law and are likely to be subject to prosecution.
As the Christmas period approaches and celebrations begin, it can be difficult to keep track of the amount of alcohol you are consuming in an evening. Even a small amount of alcohol will affect the way you drive, so it is important to plan ahead – either decide to stick to soft drinks, have a designated driver who isn’t consuming alcohol or arrange public transport or a taxi to get home.
