National Apprenticeship Week (9th-15th February 2026) is a time to celebrate opportunity, ambition and real-world learning. At Austin & Carnley, it’s also a moment to shine a light on the people who represent the future of the profession - people like Ella.
At just 17, Ella is already building something many people don’t find until much later: confidence, clarity and a genuine love for the law.
We sat down with Ella to talk about her apprenticeship journey, why she chose this path, and what it’s really like to grow a legal career from the inside of a supportive firm.

Ella, let’s start at the beginning. Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
“I actually started working at Austin & Carnley when I was 15 ” Ella explains. “I helped out during half terms, archiving, picking up files, and I just found it really interesting.”
What started as work experience quickly became something more.
“When I finished school, they offered me an apprenticeship. It felt like a natural next step.”
That decision - choosing hands-on experience over a traditional classroom route - has already paid dividends.
You’re completing a Business Administration apprenticeship - what does that involve?
Ella’s apprenticeship combines practical work with structured learning.
“I only have to attend a small number of college sessions - most of it is done remotely through assignments,” she says. “I also get regular feedback from my college advisor, Teams meetings and progress reviews - you’re really supported the whole way through.”
And exams?
“I’ve got a project presentation to deliver to a board, and one multiple-choice exam. It’s manageable, especially if you enjoy learning ‘by doing’.”
What’s surprised you most about working life compared to school?
Without hesitation, Ella highlights confidence and communication.
“At school, you don’t really learn how to talk to people professionally. In an office, you’re on the phone, dealing with clients, communicating with external organisations.”
She laughs. “I used to hate picking up the phone - now I’m completely fine with it.”
Those everyday interactions have helped her develop skills that simply can’t be taught in a classroom.
“You grow socially. You learn how to work with people of all ages and backgrounds. That’s been huge for me.”
You’ve discovered a passion for Private Client work — what draws you to it?
“I didn’t expect to love the legal side as much as I do,” Ella admits. “But Private Client just clicked.”
For Ella, it’s about people.
“The clients are lovely. You’re helping them with something important - wills, legacies, planning for the future. It feels meaningful.”
She contrasts it with other areas of law.
“Some areas can be really stressful. Private Client feels calmer, more personal. I really enjoy drafting documents and being part of that process.”
What’s it like working at Austin & Carnley?
This is where Ella’s enthusiasm shines brightest.
“They’re honestly such lovely people,” she says. “Because I started so young, everyone’s been incredibly supportive.”
What matters most to her?
“No one makes you feel silly for asking questions. They take the time to explain things properly, even if you’ve never done it before.”
Ella works closely with trainees, solicitors and support staff alike - learning from everyone around her.
“You’re trusted. You’re included. You’re taught.”
How has the apprenticeship changed you as a person?
“Confidence - 100%,” Ella says. “My mum’s noticed it too.”
She’s more comfortable speaking to people, more self-assured and clearer about her future.
“You grow up quickly in a good way. You feel capable.”
What would you say to someone considering an apprenticeship?
Ella doesn’t hesitate.
“It’s harder than school - but it’s so much better in the long run.”
She explains why:
“You’re pushed out of your comfort zone. Every day is different. You learn how the real world works and you get paid while doing it.”
For her, it’s been transformative.
“I’d absolutely recommend it.”
And finally - where do you see yourself in five years?
“I’d love to be qualified and working in Private Client,” Ella says.
And Austin & Carnley?
“I’d really like to stay here. They’re genuinely lovely to work for.”
